I used to think that these types of effects were so cool, especially when I started taking photos.  I think even before I really started taking photos, I was really fascinated by this.  Now it seems kind of old school and kitsch and not something you see anymore.  Photos are so much more complicated now and this does seem kind of old fashioned.  Of course it is a heck of a lot easier to do with a digital camera than it was with a manual camera.  The bulb setting, off set flash, hoping for the best.

I don’t do this kind of stuff anymore because I shoot so quickly now.  But I miss this kitsch.
