The master shall reveal a secret

Today was snow storm number eleventy thousand billion of this brutal winter.  For Googling purposes today was “boston snowstorm February 1 2011.”  Maybe throw a Downtown Crossing in there as well, if you want.

Why do I keep photographing the snow storm?  Because I want hits on Google for the blog, obviously!  No, not really.  Of course I want people to look at this blog, but there is something really interesting about places when they snow.  They take on a different kind of an atmosphere with the white stuff around.  Looking at it is great, but walking through it to get these photos gives me that intrepid explorer in Antarctica feel.  Except I am going home to milk, cookies and Biggest Loser and likely those people aren’t.

All right, enough jammering.  The photos, the photos.  Yes, the photos:

Now for the secret revelation:

Notice how the snow seems to have stopped in space there.  Notice how it seems to be hanging there.  Cameras do not favor this. Snow tends to fall fast, too fast for the fastest cameras.  However, there are two ways to capture the snow.  Either you pop the flash or if you have a small automatic (like the one these were taken with) you zoom in on your subject.  I can explain somewhat how it works with the flash, that the pop of light stops the action, but I can’t explain the secret behind the zooming.  All I know is that it works.

I decided to separate this one and when you see it, you will see why:

Love among the white stuff.  Love among the ruins.

And finally, my New York Times type of shot where the misery of snow is shown:
