Confused? Well, this is Mercer House, a historic residence in Savannah, Georgia. It was lovingly restored by one Jim Williams, an well known Savannah antique dealer. OK, so seriously, stop sounding like a tour guide and get to the salacious stuff? Well, in that front room to the left, Jim Williams shot his gay lover Danny Hansford in 1981. It was in a little book called “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” a read I highly recommend.
You are forbidden from photographing inside the house, what else is new, but you can’t even photograph the garden. I managed to snap this one before getting a talking to from the guide:
Like I said, photos in Mercer House forbidden, and its too bad because the place is stunning. I wanted to go there because of the spooky true crime aspect and it was weird to stand in a room where a murder had taken place, but I’ll give Jim Williams one thing. That man had incredible taste and a sense of humor. There were arms of statues sort of strewn in random places and a cat who “owns the place” according to the guide. She was another one. She referred to the Civil War as “the unpleasantness.” Love it!
Savannah did its part to provide loads of American Gothic charm:
and, surprisingly, palm trees:
Truth in advertising:
It was green everywhere:
I loved Savannah.
