My first attempt at taking these types of photos came on a ferry between Jutland and Funen in Denmark. The Danes were building a bridge between the two islands. I probably have some historic photos of the place because that bridge is finished. I stood on the ferry and just shot and shot and shot and shot. Now this is before digital during the reign of film when shot were expensive. I got a couple of good ones and convinced me that the old rule that you can’t shoot into the sun was kind of bunk. On that journey I had the luxury of standing on a nice, solid ferry.
This time I didn’t have that luxury. This time I was on a kayak with a faithful second mate trying to prevent water from getting into the kayak, listening to my second mate’s jokes about my inability to tell left from right and just shooting between all the moments when I didn’t have to paddle. Oh well. Not an afternoon wasted, that is for sure.
