Gold Medal For Amazing

This evening, the Brasileiros won their first gold medal in gymnastics.  They should be getting gold medals in mural painting.  Today a mural by Os Gemeos, two Brazilian brothers was unveiled.  Needless to say, all the judges are in agreement.  Give these boys a gold!:

When In Doubt, Go Rottweiler

So I’m innocently standing next to a boat earlier today, when a guy starts wildly flailing his arms around and telling me to take his photo.  I would have but I had the wrong lens on, asked him to wait.  Instead of waiting, he goes “no, wait, he wants to see you.”  And out came:

And the longer I stood there, the longer the beast became curious about my camera.  Perhaps it smelled like meat:

And Jesus Said…

Let the bookstore be open!!!  I mean probably in Amharic, but hey, were there to have been bookstores back when he was alive, and were those ancient bookstores to sell bibles and nonsuch, he’d be thrilled when they were open:

This I’ve Been Playing with For Years

I could wax lyrically about where the fascination with such photographs started and how I continued this for so many years.  The perfect version of this picture has lived in my mind for years and I guess with each attempt, I chip away at it.

During my time in Denmark, I lived in a modernist dorm surrounded by flat land.  All of it stood out in its starkness.  Even the words in Danish had a flat starkness to them that I to this day find fascinating.  Denmark marked a new beginning in my life, a new chapter and I think this type of stark flat photograph may have come from there.

I continually looked for examples of how to capture this perfect photograph.  I guess with each attempt, I chip away at it.  I keep trying:

In no way does this look Danish.  But it is weird and stark.

The Work is Going Somewhere

Every couple of years my work changes.  I’m at a loss as to explain why this happens.  When I started taking photos, I just took ones of things, never really people.  Now I take a lot of photos of people.  I notice how they stand, what they wear, etc.

But now I’ve noticed that my work is changing again.  I don’t exactly know what to call this new style, but I’m definitely noticing new things.  I’m not sure what this direction is yet, but I feel like there is a change.  See if you notice anything new:
