10,000 Men of Harvard

Whenever I visit Harvard, I always get these visions of pictures like this:

OK, I’m a retro addict. Guilty. And I love those old Harvard photos. There is something so “Dead Poets Society”/Catcher in the Rye/A Separate Peace to me.

Today I visited the Harvard Memorial Church. I’ve never seen it open. It was quite stunning and it brought back those photos I posted above:

Lovely and Amazing

Boston, in my opinion, is really upping its game public art wise. Every summer they do some kind of amazing public art project on the Greenway that is really breathtaking. T

This summer is no exception. This summer is an aerial art project by Janet Echelman using interweaving bands of fiber. The whole effect is of a bubble floating above the Greenway. Let’s have a look:

Boston Fashion File XLIII

Intrepid detective edition.

On my daily travels, I spot a lot of different kinds of people. The ones wearing the most amazing fashions get featured up here of course on Boston Fashion File. I always silently chuckle when I read that title because this blog feature is meant to document all of the excessively strange things people wear around Boston and the title is taken from New York Fashion File, which documented the Paris, New York, Milan and Tokyo collections.

But this is so much more fun.

I spotted this interestingly dressed young man at Scooper Bowl, solving a case or just trying to detect which ice cream was the best. He was so game to have his photo taken and I loved that.

Scooper bowl detective man, thanks for the memories!!!!!

Summer .0025

A wise man, actually a Saudi friend once told me that in his country, there are two seasons — summer one and summer two. I mean this is hilarious in some many ways, considering that Saudi Arabia, by my friends from that country has been described as an oven, a frying pan and a lot of other things relating to simply being much too overheated.

New Englanders joke that there are four seasons in this area — pre winter, post winter, winter and road reconstruction. Hence I have chosen what I think is a pretty interesting title for this entry — summer .0025.

Now the weather lately has been pretty ridiculous. Last week I had to put all the fans into the windows of the apartment I live in because it was too hot. This week I had to take them out. I also had to wear my winter jacket and boots on Tuesday because it was so cold. Today I wore a sweater that I took off because it was too hot. Who knows what joys tomorrow will bring.

And this brings me to the actual topic of this entry — Scooper Bowl. Ah Scooper Bowl, 10 bucks and you are on your way to eating all the ice cream you want. A good thing. A good thing for Jimmy Fund, a good thing for the people of Boston and usually the unofficial kick off of summer.

Although this year, I’m not sure which summer they mean. I’m leaning towards summer .0025.

Release the ice cream!!!!!

People of Boston VIV

Well, yeah, this feature is being resurrected on the blog. I haven’t used it in a while, but here it is. I guess this could also go under the category of Boston Fashion File, but one thing at a time.

Anyway, a few days ago, it was Memorial Day, quite a solemn occasion where the sacrifices of our men and women in the armed services are commemorated. There is a quite humbling memorial organized in Boston Common for it every year:

And then there were these people. People of Boston who gave the event that extra special something:

The editors of Wrong Side of the Camera Take You Behind the Glamour…..

By editors, I mean me. I’m also the art director, sittings editor, stylist and publisher. I left out a few other titles I hold here too, but Anna Wintour look out. I’m taking over.

Eh, just kidding. No need to look out Ms. Wintour. I have bigger fish to fry. But get ready for a fun little entry that will take you behind the scenes of a glamorous photo shoot.

A friend of mine, a guy who I will always help out, asked me if I could a couple of my friend together for a little makeup session with his mom for pictures for her portfolio. I immediately agreed. Who doesn’t love a day of beauty and pampering!!!!! Ok, well, that is what my friends said. I wanted to help my friend out primarily.

He asked me to bring my camera and shoot the photos. I don’t get to take a lot of posed portraits and I’ve never taken any that were as glamour as these.

The circumstances of these couldn’t have been more glamorous if we had tried. We shot these in the front yard and back yard of my friend’s house in Brookline. One of them was shot in her kitchen. My friend’s mom, the makeup artist, jumped on a chair when I came into the house with the dog.

Anna Wintour has the Tuileries garden in Paris. We’ve got the much more glamorous Brookline front yard. Anna ain’t got nothing on us.

(Of course the models did a lovely job with the makeup and our makeup artist was top notch):

The Mythical Ashmont

In Boston, it feels like visiting another neighborhood is like visiting another country. I mean we have Boylston street, Brookline and Boylston street, Boston, etc. You also tend to stay just in the area where you live. I mean I might venture out into the wilds of Brookline (which is literally steps from my door) but there are exotic regions of Boston, where I’ve never visited.

A friend invited me to her graduation party in Ashmont, to be taunted by her hilarious Irish mother and to enjoy a generally wonderful party. Ashmont. Hmmmm. What was that? I mean I’d seen it as the last station on the red line for years, but had I gone there? No. Did I know the area? No. But off I went, with the promise of Irish taunting and of course, picture taking.

Turns out Ashmont is quite lovely and had a lot of these Hopper-esque kind of houses that I so enjoy photographing:
